Anxiety and nervous system dysregulation go hand in hand.
Most people think anxiety stems from the brain but it actually stems from:
- Lack of “feel good” neurotransmitter production in your 2nd brain (the gut)
- Nervous system dysregulation
Have you ever thought about what it means to regulate your nervous system and how that could alleviate your anxiety?
Most likely, the answer is no, and that’s okay.
However, your nervous system is running your life moment by moment, so it might help to take a look.
Join us for episode 9 of The Optimized Life Podcast where we’re talking all about how to regulate your nervous system.

WHAT IT LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE TO REGULATE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM (2:35)
When your nervous system is regulated, it’s easier to stay in a state of “flow” or in a state of “ventral” as its referred to in polyvagal theory.
So what exactly does this look like?
When you’re in flow, you’re able to stay in the present moment.
When you’re in flow, you’re able to let go of ruminating thoughts.
When you’re in flow, you’re able to calmly respond to whatever is going on around you.
When you’re in flow, you’re able to live in a place of gratitude.
When you’re in flow, you’re able to let go of resistance to uncertainty and stay open to possibilities.
When you regulate your nervous system and can enjoy this state of flow, it feels like a more comfortable, confident, compassionate, connected version of yourself.
WHAT NO ONE TAUGHT YOU ABOUT HOW TO REGULATE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM (16:00)
Uncertainty activates the nervous system and this is when we find ourselves caught up in incessant or compulsive thinking. Our thoughts tend to dwell in the past or fast forward to the future.
Worry is tenacious and we can slip into trying to control everything out of this state of fear, but over-controlling is exhausting.
If we can realize that worry or anxiety is really just exhilaration, we can learn to focus our thoughts on excitement instead of fear. We can learn to change our thoughts, and thereby our feelings, by shifting our focus from “I have to” or “I need to” to “I get to.”
Simple changes can make a profound difference in optimizing our nervous system and transforming our feelings and experience at any moment.
