How To Stop Sugar Cravings Through Repairing The Gut

If you have ever wondered how to stop Sugar Cravings for good you have come to the right place.

Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try you cant get those sugar and processed food cravings to go away?

IN THIS EPISODE I AM GOING TO TEACH YOU HOW TO STOP SUGAR CRAVINGS FOR GOOD THROUGH REPAIRING YOUR GUT.

All my life I constantly craved carbs and sweets. I would jokingly say, when the “all carb” diet comes out that will be the one for me.

For 8 years I coached my clients on the importance of “eating clean” and following a “whole food, low sugar” way of eating.

I thought that if my clients followed that way of eating … the sugar, the carbohydrate and the processed food cravings would eventually go away on their own. But in all honesty, they didn’t.

It was always a battle between white knuckling it and will power.

Including for myself. And in one stressful moment I would mysteriously find myself in the Chick fil A drive through and back at square one.

And then I came across the book The Mind-Gut Connection by Dr. Emeran Mayer and changed the way I viewed sugar and processed cravings forever.

Did you know that sugar and processed food cravings are the result of bad bacteria in your gut?

Every time we put sugar and processed food in our bodies it changes the composition of our gut microbiome. Over time we start to grow a population of bacteria that relies on it as its food source. So it has nothing to do with will power, the living bacteria is literally signaling to our brain “feed me, feed me.” The singling from the gut to the brain will always be stronger than our will power.

In addition to the sugar and processed food cravings, when the bad gut bacteria starts to overtake the good bacteria it can also trigger the dreaded brain fog, fatigue, poor concentration, anxiety, depression and so forth.

THE ONLY WAY TO STOP SUGAR CRAVINGS IS TO DO A TARGETED INTERVENTION TO GET THE BAD GUT BACTERIA TO DIE OFF. FOLLOWED BY AN INTERVENTION TO RE-INTRODUCE THE GOOD BACTERIA.

RE-BOOT

Do a targeted intervention to get the bad gut bacteria to die off and reset your microbime back to a neutral state off by following a grain/sugar free, vegan eating plan for 3 days as outlined below. I recommend doing this in conjunction with the cleansing ayurvedic herbs found in my Top 5 Hacks (link above).

After the 3 days you can go back to your normal eating routine but for optimum results I highly recommend you continue upping your intake of the high fiber and phytonutrient dense foods as outline in the Reboot Booster column. You will also notice after the 3 days that your cravings will start to change, for the better.

RE-BALANCE

Help the good gut bacteria flourish by supplementing with the targeted probiotic strains (good bacteria) that have been shown to positively impact optimal mental and overall health (e.g. improved digestion, depression, anxiety and stress/cortisol response).

It’s imperative that these targeted probiotic strains be matched with their preferred food source, commonly referred to as prebiotics, to encourage the growth of bacteria once they are there.

Phytobiotics are also essential to include in your diet to protect the good bacteria once it’s there.

You need all 3 (probiotics, prebiotics and phytobiotics) for the re-intervention to be successful.

RE-CALIBRATE

Sugar and processed foods cause the permeability (holes) in the gut lining often referred to as leaky gut. If you’ve ever experienced the sudden onset of food intolerance’s or auto-immune conditions leaky gut is the 1st thing you need to address. Leaky gut causes an inflammation cascade throughout the body as bacteria and toxins are able to “leak” through the intestinal wall and into the blood stream.

This can easily be repaired by giving the body the key nutrients needed to repair gut lining that can often be in short supply in a compromised gut. These nutrients include zinc, alpha and beta glucans, antioxidants (e.g. vitamins A, C, and E), fish oil, and the amino acid glutamine.

Addressing leaky gut will also improve the production of your “feel good” neurotransmitters in your gut and help to optimize signaling (neurotransmitter, hormone and immune cells) between the gut and brain

RE-CHARGE

Your brain by giving it targeted nutrients for enhanced mental focus, stamina and cognitive function.

These nutrients include pomegranate, green tea, omega 3 fatty acids, guayusa and healthy fats like olive oil, avocado and coconut oil. Coconut oil contains many gut nourishing properties.

RE-ALIGN

I always recommend having calming herbs on hand to increase stress resilience like ashwagandha (Sensoril), kanna, rafuma and magnolia bark. The combination of these 4 herbs, when taken together, is like having a yoga class in a bottle. Life changing.

It is important to pay attention to lifestyle choices. Sleep, exercise, and stress can all affect the GI tract. Balancing these things plays an important role in optimal mental and overall health.

Make sleep a priority. Its the most important restorative thing we do. And its free.
